Match the retainer and transmission

For WRX or STI service, check the vehicle year, transmission code and retainer part number before ordering. The service tool references identify the intended application; this is an aftermarket tool. Match the retainer's slots to the socket's pin pattern and confirm clearance around the carrier.

Subaru's 2008 5-speed manual transmission procedure uses 18630AA010 for the front differential side retainers. On the 2008 STI 6-speed, that tool serves the right side; the left side calls for 18630AA000. A procedure calling for 18630AA000 needs the corresponding left-side tool.

Retainer adjustment

Turning a side retainer changes the differential adjustment. Follow the workshop procedure for the actual transmission when recording retainer positions and turns, restoring the lock plates, and checking backlash and bearing preload. The socket turns the retainer; it does not measure those settings.
