How To Use Step Drill Bits

Step drill bits are designed to enlarge a hole as the bit drills through the metal. Each step on a bit is larger in diameter than the previous step. Smaller step drill bits are self-starting and no pilot bit is needed to start the hole. On larger step drill bits you need to pre-drill a hole that is equal in diameter to the smallest step on the bit.

Always remember to wear appropriate eye protection (safety goggles or glasses).

Step 1: Create An Indentation

Use a center punch to create an indentation on the metal. Place the center punch on the surface of the metal and hit it with a hammer. This indentation will provide a place for the drill bit to 'catch' so that it doesn't drift to the wrong location.

Step 2: Drill The Hole

Secure the step drill bit into the chuck of the drill motor. Always create the initial hole with a small step drill bit before moving onto larger step drill bits in order to increase the diameter size of the hole. Apply cutting fluid to the center mark as well as the step drill bit. Align the tip of the bit with the center mark on the surface of the metal. Depress the drill's trigger to start drilling the hole ensuring to run the step drill bit completely through the metal. Add larger step drill bits as required in order to reach the desired hole diameter. When drilling the hole always remember to apply additional cutting fluid to the step drill bit as well as the edges of the hole to keep them cool.
